Little test; 2048x1024, 30min on GPU for 850 passes

It's still quite noisy and has similar problems with caustics as Octane's pathtracing. The features are very rudimentary, most of the things you would expect of a renderer are missing and it crashes a lot (especially when you tweak the material nodes under GPU). The material node work-flow remind a little of Octane's (buttons panel gets updated when you work on nodes), but I sincerely don't know how else it could be done. Currently it's a "skeleton" of the (promising) things to come. The work-flow with this renderer will be very speedy (considering it's integrated and interactive) and the material pipeline packed with cool nodes (everything from the app that it's feasible to expose). But (unfortunately, I must say :D ) it's still long from finished or usable.

So, RS needs to fear Cycles only if they decide to go on a holiday for half a year or more :)

I went to school and run cycles on my schools laptop [very small] and it run smoothly, it makes luxrender look like a windows 98 porgram. And on my schools other two computers. All in cpu mode.
you need to bare in mind that my schools hardware is ancient.

cycles really takes up what hardware is has and uses it to the fullest.
Im suprised that the schools hardware can even run a raytracer full stop.

yeah I was using it last night and tbh with a single GPU I found it easier to work in CPU mode as I was still able to use the UI - also when I tried to do final render in GPU it crashed, which I think may have been too much mesh detail or something (it crashed at the 'loading' part and my model was a double 6/6 subdiv with displace on it) - it didnt crash in CPU at final render.

It is VERY noisy though - after 348 passes with max bounces 24 my image was still way too noisy

I'm not sure you need to "install" anything, Blender should work right out of the package. If Cycles is not already enabled there's a drop-down for installed engines at the top menu bar, if it's not there, then you need to enable it in the File / User preferences / addons tab / render

also make sure to get latest drivers - I had to install WHQL 270.61 before 'GPU' was visible in the render options...

I guess about what you guys care most from my research:
Radeon + GeForce in one system.
It´s a simple yes - at least for Windows.
Works flawless, just messed up my color calibration. Couldn´t load profiles anymore or apply them.
In Linux I got my WM on the nvidia xscreen, on the Radeon I had a console. Didn´t bother to edit my xorg.conf to get both running.
Also in OpenCL only one card could be used at once, at least in Luxray and Smallluxgpu.

Proof? Sure:
Image
Octane is running left on the Radeon, the GeForce is right doing the work.

If you are intrested in my further research into Blender and GeForce/Radeon/Quadro/OpenGL research you can join up or read here:

I am also looking for someone with a Quadro 2000 to do some quick tests in above thread.

Thanks for that test. Definitely going to dust down my old ati 2600xt card now for display.Good job I never sold it.

Quick question , which driver did you load first. The Geforce or the ATI Driver or did win 7 detect both at the same time ?

I guess that for this trick you must have two monitors?
