I tried to order a Gainward 285 GTX 2GB, but it is not available currently and none of the shop owners that I called has been able to tell me if and when they will get some.

I also think holding off for a wee while is a good idea. Who knows, in a few months 295's might be 2/3rd of the price and Octane will probably utilise all that processing power!!!

I'm really tempted in upgrading but I'm trying to keep my sensible head on!!!

You're probably going to be kind of hard pressed right now to find a new 285 for mac right now as everyone is working on the gtx470 and gtx480 for a hopeful release here shortly. I know EVGA just had a fresh stock of 275's and I think 285's, but I just checked and they are gone again. When all else fails, there's always ebay. Can anyone say what the difference is between a standard 285 and the mac edition?

Im not sure but the difference between the PC and MAC version is probably in the package and in the drivers included
But spec wise I think its the exact same GPUs with the exact same clockings

Hi guys,

I'm not %100 sure but i don't think you can place a normal commodity PC GPU card in a MAC.

I think you need to buy a MAC version as the slot is different and the hardware is not compatible.
Maybe someone can check this before mac users order any PC video cards / GPU's ?
