good result. Could you show an example of your SSS texture map?
Does it look like the common Mental Ray SSS fast skin maps?

Is there any chance you could provide more details on what you are doing?

You reference the material mix of a diffuse and SSS map.

Are both of these diffuse materials?

You mention adding the SSS map as the colour to refraction but isnt only specular materials capable of refraction?

Some solid guidance is needed to use as a starting point as so far everyones being a little vague.
