Hello again,

I don't wanna be a pain in the
I'm eagerly waiting for any info about the Cubix replacement or any external hardware solution really.
I won't buy my new hardware until i know what things we would expect in the future (this year)
Even solid rumors would make me happy ;)

Best regards

Hey,

The link posted above is in our licensed customers area, it's not accesible to public users.
It uses the vDock products, which you can find here: www.villagetronic.com

Hi guys!

I’m new with octane, I have already started testing it but my laptop’s 4 year old nvidia geforce 9600M GT… you can imagine…
So I’m looking for alternatives like the external gpu, but I have several questions:

0- please, have piety with me, I have no idea about hardware!
1- Is the ViDock the replacement of the Cubix, which is talk about here http://www.refractivesoftware.com/cubix.html?
(I’m not licensed user yet, so I can’t see this post: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5436 )
2- Is there any nvidia model limitation to put inside the ViDock or can you put any nvidia model?
3- The nvidia model you chose to put inside, is it to be compatible with your mother board or that is irrelevant because of the PCI connector?
4-The Vidock 4 Plus supports up to 225 W cards, so can’t you connect for example a GTX 480 (250 W)?

These are my questions up to now.
Thanks!

Hi, we have not tested vidock yet so can't guarantee if this is a suitable replacement for cubix.

I heard that vidock can support geforce CUDA-enabled cards, then you must also consider power limitations, cooling and your current OS. Indeed, Vidock comes in several varieties and different power supply, so you need to check power specifications of the card before you buy anything. Also, unless your laptop has the Nvidia Optimus driver, vidock will probably require an external monitor to work on CUDA based software. Best to ask the vidock guys about the matter of the external monitor.

This is not to discourage you, as there is a community member who has tried this gpu-extender setup even with some workarounds regarding the monitor. It worked and OctaneRender worked too :), but only after much research about his system and much tweaking on his part. I guess you can make it work with your laptop, too, though expenses would be high and all that at your own risk :(.

I suggest a run-through of this link to have a better view about what you're about to embark on. Best to be well-informed:

Thanks for the answer abreukers!
You are right, you cannot use any GPU. I found this compatibility table (a little bit obsolete but you can have an idea): http://support.villagetronic.com//faq.p ... wer=10#f10

I have been researching about the vidock, and I have read about its common problems, compatibilities and errors. So before buying it I will have to ask them some more questions.

There is a guy who made some videos about how to use it: http://www.jessebandersen.com/2010/11/v ... tware.html
