Hi, i just saw on this forum and all over the internet a lot of gpu comparisons and benchmarks about Octane render. But what i've seen it's just about related to gtx stuff.
Since i probably have to buy a workstation (10k + euros) based on tesla technology, i want to know if i will get more benefits using this card instead of a gtx480.

The system i'm about to purchase has 4 tesla C2050. I wonder if those 4 Gpus are better than 4 gtx480 in Octane, and if so, i want to know how much a 4 tesla system will be more powerful than a 4 gtx480 one.

This is a very hard issue to me, because you can buy about six gtx480 with the money needed to get a single Tesla C2050, so if the difference between tose two gpus is trascurable, i'd rather buy 4 gtx of course. It's obious i don't want to waste a lot of money doing the wrong buy :D

Thank you.

I'd suggest getting the GTX series of cards and save the cash. You're basically paying for the larger ram. So if you can handle 2 GB scenes (which most people can) then the GTX 480's should give you great performance.

So basically a tesla card is not so better than a gtx in terms of speed increase? The advantage is just about the ram?

I'd advise that you do some research. What I've found is that they all have similar number of CUDA cores, but the Quadros and Teslas have more support and driver that CAD and pro graphics programs utilize better. Octane just uses the Cuda Cores so the extra driver stuff doesn't matter.

I've not done any direct comparison so I cannot say for certain.

Is it possible to have a big scene : 2 gb or 3 gb in the GPU memory ?

I would like to buy a workstation and do the good choice.

Thanks :)

Yes, The new GTX580 cards, available sometimes in 3GB models do this well.
