-OdeasIn Octane's options you'd just set the 460 as the only card to use leaving the 210 displaying everything nice and smooth
Yeah, thanks a bunch!

Dia's looks like the Mother of all Mobo's!

Would love to see anything you all do in Octane.
I may upgrade later, but for now just want to see what Octane can do on the cheap.
4hr Later....
Just got back from pricing a system at Fry's ..... $520 including $70 in rebates.....more than I
thought it would be. =(
That's for an AMD mobo & cpu.....would that be a problem for Octane?
2 GPUs: Zotac GTX 580 1.5gb Amp! GPU for Octane....Galaxy 210 1gb for display
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955,3.2 ghz RAM: 8gb OS: Win7 64
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955,3.2 ghz RAM: 8gb OS: Win7 64
Does that exclude the GTX460 I take it?
Whats the rest of your system & specs your after?
You shouldn't need an really exotic motherboard as here are a few with dual PCIe slots.
The new Intel Sandybridge chips are rather good but if you prefer AMD there should be no trouble either.

The GTX460 just arrived today...I may still use it, but want to see
how Octane runs with 1 or 2 Galaxy 210's.
Would love to have a super system, but have to consider cost, and
it has escalated rapidly!
Here's the list of parts the guy at Fry's picked out:
$45 case midtower
$55 650 watt PS (after rebate)
$10 Galaxy 210 (after rebate)
$62 Athlon II Dual core 3.1GHz
$30 2gb ram
$110 Win 7 64
$40 500gb HD (Seagate, 7200, 16mb)
$18 dvd
$120 ASUS M4A88TD-V motherboard
=$490
All the components, while less expensive, are good quality (far as I can tell).
I'll try it with 1x210, 2x210, and 210 + 460 and see what render times I get.

Adding a second 210 to your system wont help your render times and will bring down your available GPU ram in octane to 512mb.
Although for $10 you could always get a second to add to another system you have or could build in the future as its a steal.
Currently toying around with some spec's & prices to see what I can come up with around your price range.
$110 for Windows 7?? Make sure its not an 'Upgrade' package (unless of course your upgrading - All editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista qualify you to upgrade.)

Intel Sandybridge System (Spec'd at Newegg.com cos its easier to find stuff/slightly cheaper in places)
CPU - i3 2100 Dual [email protected] - $124.00
Mob - Gigabyte Socket 1155 - $84.99
RAM - 4GB - $31.00
GPU - GTX460 - n/a
GPU - 9500 GT - $25.00
HDD - WD Blue 500GB - $40.00
PSU - Apevia 700w - $40.00
Case Unspecified - $30.00
DVD - Unspecified - $20.00
OS - Win7 Home Upgrade - $114.99
Total: $509.98
• Where it says unspecified its because there are a lot of different products around that price and would be your personal choice.
• Some prices are rebate prices but forgot which lol
What os are you upgrading from btw?
If you already have Vista I think you can choose to install the 64bit version anyways.
An extra $100 for hardware would mean you could get a rather nice 2nd GPU, have 8/12GB Ram or upgrade CPU to a Quad Core if you wanted to spend it.

If anyone is looking out for bargains. The clearout of old GTX480's seems to be the best
SEE:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... ubcat=1750
480 cores against 336 on the 460 - at about £30-£40 more
Also that it has 1.5GB ram on board verses the 1GB of the 460.
The gigabyte card may also run quite cool with the 3 fans.

Nice find!
Depends if you get the 2GB model of the 460 though.
Scan's a few quid cheaper still:

And you get Farcry 2 for free*

"Intel Sandybridge System (Spec'd at Newegg.com cos its easier to find stuff/slightly cheaper in places)"-Odeas
Thanks!
Won't be able to do anything till later but will chew on it some more....
I sense victory is near.
You guys are awesome!
BTW, Odeas, thanks for the Newegg.com list...I'll stick with Fry's as I live only 20min away
so don't have to pay shipping...but I better hurry before gas (i.e. petrol) goes up to $10/gal!
Friday's the earliest now that I can get the system parts and have time to put it together.
Murphy's Law...."It's always too late to do anything today, and no time tomorrow!"
Thanks!

Ah, I've got a couple of places near me I can pickup from. Very handy.
I'm pretty sure the Intel system will run quicker than the AMD system and its the latest intel socket type too so if you wanna upgrade to an unlocked quad core system for example you can.
We currently pay about £6.20 a gallon which I think is roughly $10??
If you get any more questions just ask
