I think because unbiased is so computationally intensive and has been quite slow to render on CPU ie many hours, the notion that hardware would be fast enough to render whole animations has been a little fanciful or those that were done were a bit of a novelty.
Most likely the data handling of Octane was not devised with animations in mind but as a follow on from how things were done for single renders on CPU. Of course with multiple GPU the rendering of unbiased animations is now more practical - although it still takes some time.
People attempting to do animations as routine works are now becoming aware of things that previously did not bother them. I guess people need to be a little patient and marvel that they can do unbiased animations at all rather than dwell on the legacy inefficiency.
On top of all this Refractive are riding the Cuda wave and only have the tools and the cards that are made available by Nvidia. Perhaps when graphics cards have 4gb of vram as the norm more options for Cuda coding will emerge that will be helpful getting data i/o for Octane purposes.
Unfortunately I think right now for Refractive to reconsider their approach is a little more than can be achieved by a small team while also covering the bases of what they have planned for v1.
Some way down the road it may well be that they could revise things to take advantage of new cards, improved Cuda and their coding experience and user feedback.
I am sure there is a lot of potential for Octane but realistically it cant arrive as fast as we might like.
Thats no reason not to keep forwarding ideas and requests for better functionality though.
It may be very helpful to Refractive to have the community do a fair bit of critical thinking while they focus on implementing the code itself.

I can only say that Italian ISPs are very bad and only 5-10% of citizens can access to a good and stable connection, paying a lot.
It would be great if, in the final release, we will be able to choose between usb hardware license or via internet license... and I will be happy to pay a balance. We cannot connect all our servers, or workstations, to the internet, obviously for security reasons. That problem can suggest us to buy more Octane render licences or just leave it...

We are still thinking about other solutions, but for now the OctaneLive license system won't go away. This has been discussed many times here and I'm sorry, but you have to live with it.

And you don't have to connect everything with the internet, just the computers that run Octane and leave the rest alone. Put the Octane computers behind a firewall and just let traffic through to live1.refractivesoftware.com. I have been working in many companies by now and even though I was working with sensitive data and code, I always had internet access on my computers and there never has been a problem.

Cheers,
Marcus

Indeed :)
We are trying to find constructive solutions instead of endless discussions so both sides can be happy.

Messiah 5 just had the very successful viral campaign, towards the end, licensing and activation was all the buzz.

Many accepted having to buy there own USB and create their own dongle with licensing and activation through the Messiah site.

I would be happy if I could use that same dongle for Octane Render licensing.

I would be happy even if every month I had to log on once, re-establish or refresh a security key code (that expires after a month like trial software) through the OctaneLive account. If the PC you are running doesn't have direct connection, log onto your account from any other source requesting that the new code/key be emailed or registered for manual input to existing dongle.

I would rather that then not being able to use Octane because of internet issues/failures or a personal choice to keep your main PC disconnected from the rest of the world.

There has to be a way to make it easy for honest users/buyers and extremely difficult for thief's,
unfortunately they will find a way, they always do. Maybe the Octane community can come up with a solution to fix this issue once and for all.

Cheers Ady ;)

I don't know if Octane can be linked to the GPU ID like a kind of MAC ADDRESS?? So verification will be done once by internet (to check GPU CPU and OS key license..)and in case of changing/adding GPU a new key will be made.

Hey, I was wondering since Octane is activated via internet connection, would it be possible to receive updates automatically while working in Octane? I check the forums a lot to see if a new release has been released...it would be nice if I got a notification automatically in octane? Anyone else agree?Would this be hard to implement? Just wondering..aaaannyway, back to rendering... *headphones*...

Two days ago I had a day delay in already deadline shifted production because of vandalism act on telephony company, that happened to be my provider. Some guys cut one of main data lines.

This is extraordinary rare, even comical occasion, but such occasions happen all the time.
Every minute someone in the world have loses internet connection. As Octane user base grows, there will be more and more people not trusting Octane. Honestly I don't see much of solutions except one.
I hope your profit will grow fast enough that you will not care about pirates anymore (to such extent at least).
