At the moment Octane can't handle the number of textures a moderatly complex Daz/Poser scene uses even if theres sufficent memory to load them into the gpu.

My understanding is that there are limits inposed by Cuda and the diffuse,transparency,specular and bump maps all add up quickly and exceed this limit.

Relatively simple scenes are awesome thou once youve got the hang of Octane.

What I'd like to know even if there isn't any direct Daz/poser support will there be general improvements that will give us the ability to use more textures and thus create more complicated scenes using "out of the box" daz/poser content.

Well, it depends on what you call moderatly complex scene ...

I've rendered scenes with 3 characters (2x V3 RR and M3 RR) with clothes (major cache + Liquid knight + liquid halo), a vehicle (Grim Pitbull) and a complete environment (skyline hall).
I got a message saying that I had reached a limit for texture. I thought it was the NUMBER of textures. Anyway, I reduced the size of the textures and I was able to render the scene perfectly. So I guess the problem was the total SIZE of the textures.
Even with the textures reduced at half the size (1500X1500 instead of 3000x300) the result was pretty good (except maybe for extreme close-ups, but in that case you often don't see a lot of different textures so you can leave them at full size).

I'm often really pleased with the results I get with Daz and Octane (And when I'm not, it's not Octane fault !)

Never used Daz.However i suppose one way to increase the availible space would be to Recompress the textures used in photoshop or Gimp to low res JPGs.If there are a lot of them in your scene this could help with card memory.

It would be usefull if we could get official confirmation on this.

Is there a number of textures limit?

If a material uses 2 textures (diffuse and bump) and that material is used 8 times on an object is that the same as using the same textures on 8 materials.

If I create a diffuse material and link the output to .obj nodes that use the same textures does this save memory or texture count or is there no difference?

If i convert jpg diffuse and transparency maps to png RGBA images and use them as alphaimage does that meen I dont need to enter the image in opacity and does this save memory and the texture number count.

Theres many more questions im sure

Because of the speed and relatively low cost of Octane its a very exciting possibility for us "hobbyists" and any information that can aid us would be most appreciated.

Hi, a few answers i posted in another thread.
Cuda has a texture limit.
Currently you can have up to 64 image textures, 32 float textures, and 4 HDRI RGBA textures and 4 HDRI greyscale textures.
You can use those textures as many times as you want in your materials, says you could use a texture 20 times but it is only one time in card memory.

I wonder if that still stands with the advent of Cuda 4.0?

We don't know yet, because we haven't tried it yet, but I can tell you in a few weeks :)

Always keep in mind: CUDA 4.0 is not released yet.
