cannot import obj files from rhino!!!

This is likely a hardware/OS issue, maybe your GPU is overheating ?

how could I tell if this is the case?

I'm on a macbook pro, i5 chip, 2.4 ghz, 4gb ram, nvidia geforce gt 330m.

i am not sure, it can be many things, we need more information.
i suggest you wait until the end of the week and try the updated 2.45 DEMO which we will be releasing then,
it is way more stable and full-featured as the 2.2 demo.
