I just checked at Amazon for a GTX560, but see many models made by different companies(?)
Which one is best for Octane? Too bad there isn't some way to add ram or let it use flash ram(?)
Looks like the Palit is the only one with 2gb, but don't know anything about the company.....good stuff?

I know Gainward also offer a 2GB 560.
I've heard some other Palit models having troubles with their fans failing, which when being used for something like octane (a lot of gpu load) I would be a worry.

The Palit 560 Ti is also $280.
A EVGA 2GB 460 is $230 ($220 after rebate) for not a massive leap in performance afaik and EVGA is a good brand with $60 saving.
You could also probably get some very cheap 460's on Ebay etc with gamers upgrading.
I'd double check what Palit's warranty is like before getting one.

after pricing the parts, decided to find a low cost box that I can
just swap out the current card with a GTX560.
Seems like the fastest way to get up and running with Octane, and
not trying to accumulate all the parts & OS, put it together and
hope it works.
I've found several under $400 US, eg the Lenovo Ideacentre H405-7723-1AU at Fry's....
don't know if they have stores outside the US or what shipping would add, but I'm sure there must be similar if not better deals elsewhere.
And that's not a sale price. Just started shopping, so if I find a better deal, will pass it on.

That box has an AMD integrated graphics chip.
If your looking to buy a 1 box solution I'd possibly steer towards an Intel or Nvidia integrated just to be sure there are no driver issues, cos you'd probably need to disable the AMD chip anyway to get the Nvidia card to play nice with octane (i'm fairly sure some people have had issues mixing amd with nvidia when it comes to octane.)
If your really looking to save money and get a cheap PC then building it yourself is usually a good amount cheaper and its really simple now-a-days. You'd get a much better performing PC for the same cost, or the same performance PC for cheaper

switched to it if it really renders 50x faster!
The renders are incredible and the gui looks very user friendly...why would anyone still use VRay if Octane is
so great? The time savings alone make it a must have, IMHO, but I'm not in the industry, so I don't know
why it hasn't already taken over(?)
Anyway, I'm looking forward to using it, and get a new machine as well to free up my modeling machine.

I'm not 100% sure there would be a problem with it being an integrated chip but I'd personally not chance it.
If you have an existing PC and your not going to use it after getting a new machine then I'd almost guarantee a cheaper option is building it yourself as you already have Case, HDD's, PSU, Cables, Fans and OS (even without OS your saving a lot)
I also prefer knowing that I'm getting quality parts with a future upgrade possible, not just some cheapo motherboard for example with no expansion for ram, overclocking or the higher range CPU's. (My main concern the fact it'll be a generic PSU)
Though i've been building for years so its usually done in an hour ish.

Can't get a payment method together yet (got the money just can't transfer it!) to get a licence. *sucks*

Since Octane doesn't use up much CPU resource or massive memory then you should be ok to model, just might be a little sluggish as your GPU will be getting hammered. The solution would be to buy a second very cheap GPU to use to control your monitor and dedicate a powerful GPU just to octane. It would also make octane easier to use as the view would be smoother.

I've been using only laptops for the past 8yr...my working machine is an HP6226...
runs everything (C4D, Carrara, Hexagon, Bryce, ZBrush) very well except VUE & Messiah Studio.
I just got an ASUS Republic of Gamers G73 in Dec, and it really rocks, but sadly has an ATI card, though
a good one, not cuda. =(

The GTX 560 (as well as all GPU's at the moment) only use 1 PCIe 'slot' a such but uses up 2 spaces at the back of the PC because of the vents to cool the card.
Although if your looking to add a second card for display and modelling etc smoothly while running octane then yes you'll need a second PCIe slot.
You could also look into DIY ViDock solutions if you want to add a desktop GPU to a laptop but thats gettin bit more complicated and you'd only see about 50% of the performance. (potentially adding cuda performance to your laptop)
