at least in max when there is no material assigment (ie autocad linked file with different color per layer but no material) or if the material is not an standard max material (ie mentalray material), max internal obj exporter renames it as wire#randomnumber. The thing is that at least is consistent, if you renamed it somehow next time the material would not be updated in octane at relink or octane would have to had 2 material names at mesh level, and "inside" one to keep track of real mlt file material name, and an "outside" one that could be changed. I think that it would we "wasted" work in a problem easily solved in your modeling app correctly assigning materials to your mesh. IMO

Yes, I suppose it would be a problem to make it consistent.
Later I realised in octane you can actually rename de inputs ONLY during the first import if you haven't assigned external materials to the mesh trough the inputs.
BUT, as Kubo says, it may be a problem if you update the mesh with the modelling app.
I've not tried it, but I suppose in the updated mesh, the old renamed input would dissapear and instead appear a new one with a new name, so would be better to make it right in the modelling app (if it's possible...) I'll check it arround in MAX
Thanks
