Hi guys,

as per latest info from blender commiters, 2.57 is now planned for the 30th of March and will be a 'final' release, first 2.5x stable. This still may change, but it seems it's anyway only a matter of weeks from now.

Radiance has annouced here that a new version of Octane will also be available in a few weeks, with support for a new I/O file format in XML, among plenty of other new things. At this time you may get an official plugin from RS, but I'm not aware of their plans. I'll of course assist them if they need/ask.

Regarding my unofficial plugins, this means the following:
- exporter v0.9x will not work with Blender 2.57 and will not be updated anymore, even for bug fixes.
- exporter v1.0x will not work 'out of the box' with next Octane release and support of direct writes to the OCS will be discontinued.

If an official plugin shows up with all features I want, there'll be no need I keep on with an unofficial branch, otherwise I'll continue providing an extended and unsupported one. If this happens (which I think), it will take advantage of the new XML format, which means that I may not be able to re-use all existing parameters you've setup for materials and environment in v1.0x, but I'll do my best to minimize the annoyance - if any.

I hope I'll get the XML specs enough in advance to measure the effort porting my plugin if needed, and that it'll allow keeping all features of v1.0x. You'll understand that if I get such info before the release of the new Octane, I will NOT be able to discuss it here - so please don't ask.

Everything seems very promising so far, just be patient!

Cheers,
Lionel

hmm im confused. please dont flame

So your "Non-offical Blender 2.56 plugin" is no obsolete.

and your new "WIP "Next-Gen" blender unofficial exporter" will not work with 2.56a or 2.57.and will only work with that certain blender build and below.
So that mean that you will try and convert your "WIP "Next-Gen" blender unofficial exporter" to blender 2.57 using the XML file????

sorry alot of numbers and different blender scripts

As far as i read it Radiant, that is exactly what Yoyoz is saying.

Obviously 2.57 will still be a beta version. The first official non beta version will be 2.6. Presumbaly the difference between 2.57 and 2.6 will only be additional features rather than fixing existing features.

As long as the new XML format gives access to all of the Octane features then I can't see this being anything other than a positive move. XML is, afterall, a standard format.

Sounds like Lionel will be burning the midnight oil for a while bringing us the best exporter script in the world :P

We should pass the hat around and buy him a drink.

My understanding (from the following websites) is that 2.57 will be a final version.

Just to clarify for Radiant and others who may have been confused: the new exporter will work with Blender 2.57 ('final' until next stable) and above, but not with the next version of Octane. When I'll have to modify it for the new Octane, the method for transmitting data will use the new XML format instead of the OCS direct writes.

Cheers,
Yoyoz

If 2.57 is a final release then they must have changed their naming convention. In the past odd numbers (2.5) have been beta releases with even numbers (2.6) being the final version of those beta versions. 2.4 was the last example of that with 2.49 being the last stable version before the chaos of 2.5 began the rebuilding of blender into what should be 2.6.

I'm just quoting answer from Thomas Dinges from email exchanges between committers. The key point is anyway it will superseed 2.56a.
2.57 will be a final release. The first stable one of the 2.5 series.
2.58 will be one too.

It's rather good news, even if I've also been scared when I saw 2.5x for the first time. I've changed my mind since then :-)
