Not sure what became of that idea.
I guess some enterprising person could start doing that anyway. ;)
Perhaps you could make a deal with someone here to do some renders on a pay as you go basis rather than worry about hardware and licenses yourself.
I gather you are have coursework where some renders are required?
Yeah, something like the Houdini cloud rendering would be sweet.

Well coursework doesn' require renders of any great quality, so I can do that on school computers. But on my own time, I'm creating a short. So I was hoping I could render it out nice and pretty. But no worries. I think I can just dump it on my friends render computer. Can't run Octane, but it rips through MR renders pretty fast.

The same crash on load/view object seems to also be happening to me.
Strangely, I am using a new aluminum mac mini with the GeForce 320M card.
While I know that the 320M is a weak integrated vid card, it's still strage because
my computer is the EXACT same model that is used on the Install Demo videos
(http://www.refractivesoftware.com/demotutorial_mac.html)

Being that my exact model is a mac test "rig" at Refractive, I would assume that
a 25 MB obj model, exported from C4D of a car would not be a problem.
Even with the lowly integrated graphics 320M

BTW--Cuda 3.0 drivers don't work with the new minis running 10.6.6.
You have to go to the Nvidia site and download the 3.2 drivers and toolkit

The whole situation on Mac is a little bit wonky at the moment and there has been some trouble with the graphics driver, introduced by the latest Mac OS 10.6.6 update: Bepeg4d and others have reported, that this update installs a graphics driver that newer than the latest graphics driver you can download on the internet. And this driver version is needed by the OS and installing the latest driver from the NVIDIA homepage breaks a few things.

-> Please keep that driver from the OS update, but download and install CUDA toolkit 3.2 from http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda ... html#MacOS
Then download and install the latest CUDA driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cud ... river.html

Another problem is, that the demo is quite old so that it might not run on all hardware that is supported by the latest version. At some point we will update the demo, but this is still a bit in the future and I can't say when that will happen. -> If you have tried the above and it still doesn't work, please contact me via PM. I would like to try out something :)

Cheers,
Marcus

I'm afraid tat the new GPU drivers didn't work.
It still crashes upon viewing object.
I even tried a 4MB very simple test scene, so it's not memory based.

I'm just gonna assume that it's the fault of the demo's age and he newness of 10.6.6.
Have you tested the latest full version of Octane on your aluminum mac mini test computer.
If it runs well, then by process of elimination, it's the demo that needs updating for 10.6.6.
I"m also assuming that you are using the latest 3.2 drivers, toolkits, and latest Nvidia GPU drivers on the alu mac mini test machine.

If you can assure me that the full version of Octane is working on your aluminum mac mini running 10.6.6, and hence
will work on my alu mac mini running 10.6.6, then I will happily purchase Octane.

Please forgive my timidity, but I'm buying a piece of beta software blind, and (for obvious reasons) software is non refundable.

Hey,

The demo is getting old, it's more than 6 months old now, and causes issues on latest versions of OS X...
We will provide a new demo based on our current development versions soon, next month.
That will solve a lot of these problems and allow proper testing of the demo, including the many bug fixes, stability improvements and new features licensed customers currently have access to.

The current demo is so old it does not reflect our latest commercial versions...
