Yes, fortunately we are here in Auckland and far away from Christchurch. But this quake was really nasty... It must be frustrating for the Christchurch people since they are still recovering (and will be for quite a while) from the first big earthquake. I live in Christchurch and I can tell you things won't be back to normal for years. the city centre and its historical buildings have been ravaged, not least of which is the central Cathedral, our city's main landmark. The death toll is likely to top 200 once all the bodies are recovered. I am dreading reading the list of names once it is released, in case I know someone who is on it. Thankfully all of my close friends are ok, and I was lucky enough not to suffer any major damage at home, but this will leave a mark on the city and its people for a long time.
We are still getting regular aftershocks too, and many areas are still without water or electricity. I have water but still have to boil it due to probable contamination.
Some areas are flooded, many areas have had sand and silt pour out and form volcanoes on the ground, or even bury cars halfway up on the road or fill in peoples houses. This is from the liquefaction that is caused by the vibrations of the earthquakes.
Petrol and other supplies are in short supply, You can get them if you need them but most places are still closed and the selection can be thin. Thousands of people are now homeless and staying in emergency shelters.
