ok I know it's what everyone does when they first use a 3d program but I do love me some greebling, for ages I was too thick to make a mesh made of enough quads to use discombobulator succesfully in blender 2.49 but thanks to Jonathan Blendercookies wonderful 'make a clean hole in a ball tutorial' I discovered the converting a cube into a sphere using subdiv and 'to sphere' -

pathtracing, 1486 samples, maxdepth 2048

some slight contrast increasing and optikverve virtual photographer plugin set to 'ambience' done post render:
