matej wrote:I've tested the 2.4 CUDA 3.2 on Ubuntu 10.10, nvidia drivers 260.19.26, and it works ok.

I've noticed that the GUI responsiveness is somewhat worse than with pre2.3 (I have only one GPU, I guess that for normal work having a dedicated GPU for the display is a must).
OTOH, when paused, the responsiveness is normal again (under pre2.3 it wasn't) and I can do tonemaping without lag = one more small thing that makes life easier :)

I'll do more extensive testing later, but it looks very nice. Good job!

PS,
the CPU usage is still maxed out (both cores at 100%) when rendering heavier scenes. Could some Ubuntu user please confirm (or deny) this behaviour on his machine?

hey matej -today the mysterious linux user happy day;)

same on my machine two cores of my Q6600 quad are running at 100%. got ot check how far it differs to 2.3, but later. first i want to have fun:)

Mysterious Linux User™

mib, grimm, dave - thank you for your inputs. It seems Octane is taxing the CPU on all our systems, just that my relatively weak machine (2 core CPU, 1 GPU) is overwhelmed.

ehm, alpha material crash in big resolution after about 1 minute of rendering, see attached scene, just select material. it is reproducible. on ubuntu 10.04, GTX 460, cuda 3.2, driver 260.19.26.

Hmm, maybe it helps to completely delete the directory /ust/local/cuda and then reinstall (in that order)
- the latest NVIDIA driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-mac ... river.html)
- the CUDA 3.2 toolkit (http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda ... html#MacOS)
- the CUDA 3.2 driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-cud ... river.html)
?

Or just wait for the CUDA 3.0 releases, which I'm currently preparing and which will be available in 2-3 hours.

Cheers,
Marcus

Ok, the problem is each render pass at 4Kx4K resolution takes too long: On my GTX 470 each pass takes 5-6 seconds and according to the NVIDIA CUDA forum there seems to be a 5 second timeout in the Xserver. I don't know how to change that.

Is the GTX 460 used by your X server? Maybe you can run the X server only on your GTX 260. This might help.

If nothing helps, try it with 2Kx2K resolution, which should take less than 5 seconds on your GTX 460.

Cheers,
Marcus

Just to let you know. I have posted the CUDA 3.0 builds.

Happy rendering,
Marcus
