For this scene I did something I have not done previously, that is too model the entire scene with only one image. This was a new way of doing things (instead of a floor plan etc.) but was a fun, learning experience. This is the Picture that I based my modelling off.
So I began by adding the simple base plane that the entire scene would be built off and getting it to line up correctly with the image's perspective. Here is an image of the lining up; note that the blend file had been played around with alot since when I first lined it up so its a bit out of place.
Once the ground works were down pat, I stuck a simple texture on the floor and walls, and tested how the lighting would work with only two windows, in octane.
I was not entirely happy with the results as the room seemed to be out of proportion, which was fixed when objects to actually compare proportion to were added into the scene. The couch I got online as I couldn't be bother modelling one! I know lazy right? So after adding most of the objects, I created a clay render in octane, just to test the dynamics, composition, and for the last time make sure, as well I could, that the objects in the scene were to the right proportions.
After doing this, I got to adding a few more objects and then got stuck in to some Uv-mapping goodness. Good thing about interior scenes is that Uv-mapping, is almost always, a very basic task as objects are normally VERY BASIC. So after applying a few textures here and there, I chucked it into octane and let her crunch away for a bit.

So I got up to make myself a coffee, and pointed my fan at the back of the computer (just for good measure:P). But upon arriving back at my computer, I met a sorry scene. Yes, it is ok I guess... But look at the lighting! Look at all the different points of focus! Look at the bad lack of lighting in the far room... So, much to my displeasure, this project is still a work in progress.
A great way of deciding the design quality of any image is to change it black and white. After doing this I began to realize many of the problems I needed to fix.
So that is where I am up to!
What would be awesome is if all you guys gave me tips and advice on how to make my image look that little bit better, and make it closer the original reference image!:D
