NOTE: Before I realized the problem seemed related to the "Use shared surface" preference, I did try a number of different combinations in the Device Preferences using one or the other GPU's with various settings.

I'm also running my 3090 headless. But during testing I did hook it up to a monitor to see if that would make a difference. Not sure of the exact results but I still recall having an issue even then.

Thanks! Can you share the Blender System Info (Check which GPU Blender uses. In Blender: Help > Save System Info) and Octane log (Property Panel - Render - Show Octane Log) with us ?

While you collect the log, could you also try this? Try each GPU (including the eGPU) and see how it goes.

See attached zip for requested info.

Regarding MS System Graphics settings, I did not have an eGPU option. Below are results from the choices available to me while "Use Shared Surface for Viewport" was enabled in Octane Blender preferences:
  • Let Windows decide: Viewport Failed to render.
  • Power Saving (NVIDIA RTX 5090) - Viewport failed to render
  • High Performance (NVIDIA RTX 5090) - Viewport failed to render.
  • Specific GPU 1: NVIDIA RTX 5090 - Viewport failed to render.
  • Specific GPU 2: NVIDIA RTX 3090 - Viewport failed to render.
