This is a production release of the OctaneRender™ 2026.6.0.0 for Houdini™ plugin compiled with the Octane 2026.6 core. This 2026.6.0.0 release is available for the latest Houdini production builds on Windows x64, Linux.

Houdini production builds supported by this release: 20.5.684, 21.0.729, 22.0.429, 22.0.459 and 22.0.466.

If you are not sure if your Houdini version is compatible with the plugin - just run it and you will see an error message in case of incompatibility.

Linux Note
On Linux only default Houdini builds are supported.
This means that for Houdini 20.5, 21.0 and 22.0 gcc11.2 builds are supported.

New features

Known bugs
On Linux, MPlay IPR may not be working. If you are having problems with it, please switch to QT5 IPR and disable "Render to MPlay" in ROP nodes.

PLUGIN FEATURES AND FIXES:
New features and improvements
  • New $OCTANE_PASS_NAME variable for output paths (Octane ROP and Solaris). It expands to the pass's readable name. The existing $OCTANE_PASS still gives the short name.
  • Float Image texture: choose the output type. The output can now be float or color3. Scenes saved with earlier versions open with color3, so they render as before.
  • Animated OBJ display parameter is supported, so IPR will match Houdini's native viewport when OBJ's display parameter is used.
IPR improvements
  • The IPR snapshot now matches the current render region / film region.
  • Ctrl + mouse zooms the canvas in render region, film region and snapshot compare modes; tooltips show when canvas pan and zoom are available.
  • The image buffer was reworked, so the display is more reliable.
Solaris / Hydra improvements
  • MaterialX nodes that are Octane node graphs are now supported (e.g. mtlx separate nodes).
  • createPackageFileForOctane_NoSceneIndex.bat should be no longer needed, and will be removed from future releases, so please report any problems with createPackageFileForOctane.bat
Bug Fixes
  • Fixed a crash when clearing the Tile Grid image node's File List.
  • Fixed instanced analytic lights losing their instance color when reloaded.
  • Fixed ORBX exports missing assets for scenes with RGB image nodes using COP buffer.
  • Fixed the Texture Switch input slider having a huge maximum.
  • Solaris: octane:* camera or light properties now updates the IPR straight away.
  • Solaris: the Universal Camera's custom aperture color space parameter no longer fills the undo history.

Note
From 2025.1.Beta_1.0, Octane plugin for Houdini uses Houdini package file. Each build ships a script (createPackageFileForOctane.bat for Windows, createPackageFileForOctane.sh for Linux and Mac) to help create the Octane.json file as below under C:\Users\<username>\Documents\houdiniXX.Y\packages on windows, ~/Library/Preferences/houdini/XX.Y/packages on Mac, or ~/houdiniXX.Y/packages on Linux.

Code: Select all

{
    "enable": true,
    "env": [
        {
            "OCTANE_AUTOSPAREPARAMS": {
                "value": 1
            }
        },
        {
            "OCTVERSION": "<path_to_plugin_directory>"
        },
        {
            "HOUDINI_PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION"
            },
            "HOUDINI_MENU_PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/config/Menus"
            },
            "HOUDINI_SCRIPT_PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/scripts"
            },
            "PATH": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/bin"
            },
            "PXR_PLUGINPATH_NAME": {
                "value": "$OCTVERSION/dso/usd_plugins"
            }
        }
    ]
}
Important Note
2024.1.0.2 fixed the problem that the layered material nodes cannot be loaded properly, however this fix affects all layered material nodes and OSL material nodes in existing saved .hip files. When loading a .hip file for the first time using this build, it's necessary to adjust the connections of these nodes. Once the file is saved with the updated connections, the issue will be resolved.

Common Issues and Solutions
- If the plugin doesn't work at all, set HOUDINI_DSO_ERROR = 2 in houdini.env and check for messages in the terminal.
- If you're missing libglut.so.3, install the freeglut package.
- If you are having any issues with the Deadline - please submit a support ticket to the AWS.

Happy rendering,

Solaris IPR Does Not Update Material Changes Without Resetting the Render

I'm experiencing a persistent issue with OctaneRender in Houdini Solaris that has been present for several versions, including OctaneRender 2026.6.0.0 for Houdini Production.

Whenever I make changes to a material in Solaris, the IPR fails to update automatically. This happens when modifying existing nodes, connecting new nodes, or changing the material network.

To see the changes, I have to manually reset the render every time. This significantly disrupts the lookdev workflow, making material iteration unnecessarily slow and frustrating.

Hi frankserin,

Thank you for the post.
We cannot replicate this issue on our side in two different computers.
Have you done a clean installation of the OctaneRender 2026.6.0.0 for Houdini Production?

There was this restart issue with Camera and was fixed in 2026.5.0.0.
Can you DM me your scene so we can test?

cheers
Kind Regards
