Hi,
Not a daily user of Blender Octane, but I've been testing the new builds now, it feels like Vulkan in Blender is a reason behind some instabilities, for example running Vulkan viewport with Octane feels laggy. I also have a problem running 2x GPUs in Cycles with Vulkan viewport, but that's off topic.
Will Octane Blender builds always be a thing? I tried 2026 addon and can tell addon works worse than custom octane blender builds, so I wouldn't use an addon in general just because of this.
I guess for Blender Octane the good practice is to use OpenGL viewport instead? It runs a lot smoother with it.
Addon performance and Vulkan

Your assumption about needing OpenGL is correct.
To use Octane in Blender, Vulkan must be disabled, as mentioned here:

Custom Octane builds are now a thing of the past. The add-on version is the recommended path moving forward — especially with the upcoming 2026.2 release.
