It would be super nice to have feathering options directly inside the Octane light, without the need to add maps.

Distribution feather to get hard spot light or diffuse light (sharp or soft shadows) and a way to drive the gradient orientation, like in this video at 5min30 :

Maps as in, external (on disk) texture file?
Perhaps, a gradient upgrade more generally?

That (the latter) has been requested historically and is still pertinent to this day although supposedly not the highest priority.

One [upgrade] specifically for light would be a bonus since it's currently straightforward to setup once-and-for-all, subsequently saved as a preset, as a single gradient light of some sort or a whole kit with variants (as shown).

This light setup (link to the page) can be saved as an ORBX preset in Standalone (equivalent workflow in plugins).

A gradient node overhaul would be usable beyond lighting, and perhaps more beneficial for the larger crowd.

This is unlikely to occur.
Unless it has been not only approved internally but also its development initiated and available as public alpha or beta testing.
Otherwise the risks are too high (false promises caused constraining factors, feature creep and more). History has plenty of examples of those; a recent infamous one is from the big Apple.

To be honnest using gradient or any texture in lights is quite a pain in 3ds Max, I've been "forced" to use Redshift for 2 month and this is so much intuitive.
It's been 12 years that I use Octane so I'm deeply attached to this software, I don't want to make the switch !

I attach a video to show you how it is weirdly handled :

While this isn't 3ds Max specific and improving on that particular user experience, it's an early attempt at providing some presets for designing studio looking lights.

The page contains the information and URLs for ORBX download.

More appealing render previews on the page.
