I am a bit confused about some of the entries to this competition. Surely all work needs to be original? I have some people submitting work and then adding the disclaimer that the modelling is not theirs. Isn't that like me entering a painting competition using a Van Gogh?

No, it's like entering the competition with a Van Gogh sketch; you still have to do materials, lighting & compositionsteveps3 wrote: Isn't that like me entering a painting competition using a Van Gogh?
Using commercial models is allowed by the rules. Although I would also prefer that all the work had to be original.

A good model is not everything - you can still f**k up in the other parts of production. Viceversa a mediocre model can make a great render, if you put good effort in materials & lighting.
If you look through this thread, you can see renders with very good models that are not appealing or interesting, because of bad composition / structure, lighting & simplistic materials. But there are some simple renders (simple on modeling) that are very appealing (play on lights, POV, composition, colors) and draw your attention much more that the other ones.

Ok Sirs.. this is my last creation.. titled "Fairies and cherrios"
The scene is was prepared in C4D.. Software used 3DCoat, Zbrush, Poser, C4D and Bodypaint.
I changed the cartepillar this is better.... eyes and some textures..
I have rendered the scene with the Pc system of my coach where I work with a GTX 475 2GB
because I have a GT 8600 with 249mb..impossible with this one render this complex scene..
4000 samples, No filter, No Hot pixel remove.. Path Tracing with a HDR map and one sphere emitter light out scene..
Thanks..You have a nice dream..

Hi areafilm!
This is cuteness personnified - i love it !!!
I think you still have to work some more on the "trumpet-shaped grass/flowers" (bevel them some more, they are not smooth)
Also, be careful that your brightness/contrast/gamma matches your backplate image, in order to minimize the "pasted-over" feel.
Keep going, this is going to be a great image !
