Materials in the preview are black when switching to any of the orthographic views.

I found that as well in this thread here...

The simple texture is ok in that example, but the more complex textures disappear. I need to check the example file, but I wonder if it is OSL textures that disappear? Are you using OSL?

A very few of the simple materials are not affected but most of the materials turn black. I don't use OSL texture just a few OSL projections to randomize UV rotations. But even some of the materials who do not use the OSL nodes are black. Hard to pin down, what is the common denominator.

EDIT: I did a bit of testing and it might have something to do with Universal materials that have something connected to the Bump socket. When I disconnect the Bump socket, the texture appears. Just a hunch.

Ah, makes sense, in Lino's example, both of the textures that also disappear, look like they are using bump as well.

This bug can be easily reproduced.

*) Load the startup scene
*) Plug a Noise texture into the Bump socket of the Cube material
*) Go to Top view

The cube is black.

This bug also occurs with cameras when they are set to "Orthographic" - even in final rendering.

Just tested it in Octane Standalone. Same problem there as well. It's an engine issue, it looks like.

The current solution is to set the Material compatibility mode to 2022.1.

The issue is still there in 29.16.

The current solution is still the one I described.

It was an engine issue, solved in Octane Standalone 2024.1.1, which still needs to be integrated in Blender.
