Win11, 3dsMax 2025.2
I have a strange bug, if I use Octane Render, and click on the 3dsmax icon in the taskbar or on the taskbar preview, 3dsmax freezes. This does not happen with other renderers.

Thank you for reporting this issue and for the video.
It might be especially related to 3dsMax 2025. I noted some similar freeze sometimes with 2025, that don't happen with 2024 and under..
Could you check in Preferences / Trouble Shooting tab : 'Enable Extra Log' checkbox, and disable it if it's enabled ?
If it's not that, you could try the Preset menu, Reset default settings.
Also, could you try the same thing with 3dsMax 2024 ? I guess it won't freeze.. ?
We'll investigate further and fix the issue asap.
Thanks
Hi neonZorglub
'Enable Extra Log' checkbox and 'Reset default settings' unfortunately doesn't solve the problem.
This appears to be a problem with 3ds max 2025.2. There is no such problem in version 2024.2

That's a very strange bug; for some reason Max stops handling messages, like when it's minimized, but it's not a 'clean crash' ..
Fortunately I can reproduce it, (max2025.0 , Windows 10)
I'm still investigating..
Thank you
Same thing happens here, 3ds Max 2025 freezes, I have to kill it in the task manager

We are still investigating the root cause of the issue, but the new plugin version (15.08) has a mechanism to unfreeze 3dsMax when this happens while the viewport is opened.
There will be a *** FROZEN *** text in the Octane viewport title bar, with the option to Shift click to close the viewport.
After that, opening the material editor seems to prevent the freeze to happen again..
There are 3 related options in Octane preference / Trouble shooting, that should be set as follow:
-Show heartbeat in viewport title bar : enabled
-Show mouse position in viewport title bar : Enabled
-Frozen Viewport Auto-Closure : set to On Shift + Click
The first 2 provide a visual clue that 3dsMax is still alive (as opposed to crashed), and the Auto-Closure options let you choose how to close the viewport.
Note that there seems to be some other occasions where 3dsMax 2025 can freeze, even when the Octane viewport is not open..
In those cases, you will need to kill 3dsMax from the Windows task manager..

Ok, so this an Octane plugin issue, not a 3ds Max one ? I was in contact with Autodesk Devs for that particular problem

Well, there's definitely something different with 3dsMax 2025, so it could come from some new way they have to handle Windows messages..remKa wrote:Ok, so this an Octane plugin issue, not a 3ds Max one ? I was in contact with Autodesk Devs for that particular problem
It seems like the messages get lost in a process waiting for something.. The octane work around can somehow unlocks it..
I'm still investigating, but any feedback from them would be great.
Thanks
All right, I'll tell them !
