Hi all,

We are happy to bring you the third Beta of 2024.1. This one took longer than we wanted, but we are aiming to get to stable very soon. As always, thanks to all those who reported issues, and sent us feedback.

For details on the features added in 2024.1, please see the 2024.1 Alpha 1 release post.

Among the improvements and fixes below, we have also re-introduced anonymous render statistics collection for Standalone on Windows. You'll see a popup asking permission to do this on startup. We will use the data for improving Octane.

Important notes about these builds:
  • The minimum NVIDIA driver version that is required by this version is 522. You can launch Octane with an older driver version, but it will fail to render and it will produce an error message in the log.
  • The GPU version of Open Image Denoise is supported on CUDA compute model 7 (Volta) and later. The CPU version is used on machines with older models and macOS.
  • In order to support macOS 15, we needed to require macOS 14.5 as a minimum. Please use at least 14.5 or newer.
As with all experimental builds, we advise not to use this release for production purposes.

Changes since 2024.1 Beta 2
  • Performance improvements.
  • Added support for macOS 15.
  • Improved performance when rendering scenes with large numbers of unique meshes on macOS.
  • Hair now uses less memory and renders a bit faster.
  • Fixed undefined behavior leading to errors or hangs while using the gizmo tool on macOS.
  • Directional lights can now be transformed by placement nodes. This only affects the light direction, not the spread angle.
  • Fixed artefacts on large volumes in null material nodes which have high density absorption and emission.
  • Fixed missing postfx media input for postfx on macOS.
  • Fixed regression causing some geometry to not to update when dragging the animation time.
  • Added missing "Volume scatter" cryptomatte for scattering medium inside null material on macOS.
  • Fixed uv set 2 and uv set 3 for texture displacement on macOS.
  • Fixed black pixels on metallic objects with rounded edges enabled and using a baking camera.
  • Fixed broken smooth shadow terminator correction of rotated objects.
  • Fixed bug when displacement was applied to geometry without UVs.
  • Fixed some remaining cases where light sources appear doubled when looking through glass with fake shadows.
  • Fixed possible render failure if a shader has a large amount of texture inputs with delayed evaluation.
  • Increased the maximum number of iterative analytic light integration to 32.
  • Fixed post processing environment compositing when using alpha channel + environment render AOV + post processing render AOV (with "Include environment" enabled). The post processing render AOV node has a new compatibility mode to preserve the old behavior for existing scenes.
  • Fixed incorrect premultiplication for non-z-depth info render AOVs and the shadow render AOV when used in an output AOV. The render AOV output AOV layer node has a new compatibility mode to preserve the old behavior for existing scenes.
  • Fixed incorrect alpha premultiplication for some info render AOVs when displaying in the viewport or saving as TIFF files with premultiplied alpha.
  • Fixed post volume effects fog base color being interepreted as XYZ, not linear sRGB. The post volume effects node has a new compatibility mode to preserve the old behavior for existing scenes.
  • Fixed incorrect alpha compositing for post volume effects. The post volume effects node has a new compatibility mode to preserve the old behavior for existing scenes.
  • Fixed the coating layer of the Standard Surface material not working correctly. In particular, it was not coloring the transmission as expected. This has been fixed and a compatibility mode has been added to keep the changes from affecting existing scenes.
  • Fixed crash in animated file list component when selecting files.
  • Fixed crash in tile selection window for image tiles node.
  • Fixed render hang when using material picking while a render was in progress on macOS.
  • Fixed material preview stalling after using material picking on macOS.
  • Standalone no longer jumps to the front when a tool tip is displayed on macOS.
  • Vertex displacement no longer ignores the setting "merge unwelded vertices".
  • Fixed textures rendered wrong on very large scenes.
  • Fixed double highlights on universal material and standard surfaces.
  • Fixed regression in Lens shift of universal camera.
  • Fixed issue causing the "missing license" dialog to not display the right choices.
  • Fixed "merge unwelded vertices" when used with FBX files.

Have finally tested the Network Rendering with a macOS master, and couple of Windows daemons (including one via VPN!), it works like a charm and speeds things up so well!
Great job!
Hoping to have the final stable version released soon, so the devs could focus on the next promised major features to be delivered ;)
