I'm not sure of what refractive is cooking, but in my opinion, shift lens is a feature allowing to render large scenes by parts, by shifting the camera without modifying the perspective, like it is done in Blender.
There is also a "very big render script" in Blender, but I tested it a lot and it only works in a certain range of focal lengths. Out this range, it is not possible to merge the rendered parts.
