Hi. I wrote a blog post about my experience with Octane, over the years - I was I think an early adopter in Arch Viz.
It's not to be taken too seriously, but please feel free to have a read, and let me know any thoughts..

workstation well past its sell-by-date, Vista 64 bit (!) with a pitiful amount of RAM, re-invigorated with a GX 590
3ds Max Design 2011 (have 2013 but can't be bothered to re-do all the UI), CS5, and that free z-brush program, whatever it's called

Oh, god, "final gather" what a PITA all that was! As amazing as it seemed, it was terribly impractical for the kind of animation production we were doing at the time. Basic scanline with all the tricks and fakes and work-arounds and post fixes was the only way to reliably get the work out the door on time. It's good to remind myself how mind-blowing the real-time feedback we get these days truly is, and how insanely cheap the hardware and software are, too.
