I can really understand all of the impatience with this situation, but I really think we need to give refractive a break. I work in the medical industry and can say from experience that the work that it takes to create something like the octane renderer is INSANE. The fact that this was done mainly by one person is unbelievable. Does this project have a future... OF COURSE!!! Leveraging this system just in the medical imaging industry would earn refractive software 10 times as much as it has earnt already. I thing you guys forget that what we paid for our Octane Beta licenses is almost nothing. Similiar systems cost 10 times more that what we paid, and cant do alot of the things that octane can do. Again.. that radiance did this by himself is pretty much a miracle. Lets give him some slack!!!

P.S. Anyone who finds spelling mistakes in my posts has my permision to keep these, and use them in any way he or she sees fit!

It is normal that development is so damn slow, when they try to develop a software with a 2000+ user base with 3 or 4 people... we don't know many of the details about the company but they tell us if they have moved to another office, if this or that guy has a new girlfriend etc... personally I couldn't care less, and again, looks unprofessional. They are gonna have a very hard time trying to compete with the big guns, not only because they have been around for 5+ years, they also have a MUCH greater manpower, proportional to their expectations.

Giving a road map is NOT giving ideas to the competition, do you think they're stupid?? that they don't have better ideas of their own? As if I didn't know back then that the internet connection thing was just gonna be a material database... "it will blow you away..." ehem, predictable... and quite useless now that it's here (imo)

If this MLT and cuda 3.2 is so hard to pull off, I don't want to imagine what it will be to get instances and the "Full support for RenderMan RIB format for animation environments" into Octane. And I think this is the reason people is starting to freak out, they see the compleition of Octane 1.0 Final too far away...

I guess this is one issue that can arise from the business model they chose - release beta and fund development by selling the beta. One other path would have been to find larger investors, develop the software on the quiet and then when they had reached certain milestones, release it. Not as a beta... Sure, you would be running in the red for a while, but you would only have a select group reviewing progress, not 1001 eager people with limited info and wildly differing opinions.

I think we have all noticed a lack of response to 'difficult' questions raised about what is going on and now as to whether they will deliver on what they have set out to do.
How about we hear Refractive putting the record straight for their customers for themselves rather than the opinions of people who arent involved in the company.
Its no big deal. Whats to hide?

I think Refractive spoiled us a little in the beginning :) Updating so frequently and replying to almost every post, even in the demo section. It sure was nice to read what's going on with Octane on a daily basis, but in the long run i doubt a team so small can do that. I'm assuming they're concentrating on development really hard. It is a little frustrating, but it's not like our lives or jobs depend on it. We bought Octane in beta, so i guess that's to be expected. I for one am waiting patiently, ready to be surprised.

That said i hope Refractive won't ultimately go the same way Pixologic did. Their software was also highly revolutionary from the early days, leaving customers in total awe every release, but as time went by they kind of forgot to tell anybody what was going on between releases for years, which led to long fanboy/whiner forum wars and overall feeling of love/hate towards the company, shifting towards hate, despite the product being as amazing as always:P

I think everybody worries too much. I don't believe there's a problem so serious Refractive won't be able to handle it. Take it easy ;-)

Come on guys, we're working on it.
I was just wanting to write an update on the new version that's nearly finished when i noticed the continueing discussion here.

I've been preparing a post regarding the new release coming early next week and why it's been late/delayed. (cuda 3.2 issues)

I find it funny there are people who aren't even working in cg, and using Blender and Gimp and then demanding that they need the next version.
