sometimes when i'm rendering Octane will decide a mesh that has rendered perfectly fine for the last few hours is no longer smooth and it will render faceted
stopping/reloading doesn't usually help
a restart normally fixes things but can be time consuming
anything else that can be done?
sometimes polygon smoothing gets stuck off

I'm not sure if this is your problem, but Modo stops sending correct smoothing/vertex normal data to Octane (and other 3rd party render engine) if there are no visible opengl viewports.
Are you hiding your opengl viewports? The workaround is to have 1 visible in your layout.

can't test right now but that sounds like it could be it - thank you!
my Octane layout has only 1 opengl window and it's tabbed with Octane Nodes so when Nodes are active there is no 3d window
my 'fix' the last couple of days has been to select the mesh and delete something then undo and that fixed it
so there's no way to work without a 3d window open?

hmmmm
seems the celebrations were a bit premature
facetting is back even with a 3D view open. have to resort to deleting a poly/undoing on the offending mesh to fix
sounds like it has something to do with what you're saying though funk
maybe the problem occurs if the 3D window isn't permanently open?

Yes I think you need to have a permanent visible opengl viewport (at least I do in my layout)

can't say for sure but since i froze a couple of meshes that had mesh ops i don't think i've had this issue any more
been fiddling with materials for a fair few hours and it hasn't happened once yet, where before it would have happened several times already
