Hi
Anyone out here running more than 2 4090s?
These would be the hybrids/AIOs of course, as they are 2-slot so you can fit 3 on a new x670 or z790. And a big case.

Looking for anyone running 3, to report on the OB and/or speed (total or each), with an eye to checking the 3rd PCIE slot. That 3rd slot will most likely run at PCIE4x4 or 4x2 on these new motherboards, depending which board.

Assuming NOT filling the board with NVMEs as well (to avoid further bifurcation).

I was looking more for builds with off the shelf components - hybrids and large case would be possible, maybe not quite to OB4000 but close.

there are guys who run up 8x of those, but I bet they are using server grade gear.

Technically there is nothing that stops You from hooking those cards on x4 or even x1, but the question, why? You have limitations not only by bandwidth, but also physical from available space on Your mobo.

Overall if You plan to build machine and maybe already have mobo from consumer lines (Z690, Z790..x570, x670), I would say stick with 2x GPUs properly spaced..

id You plan something new, and want more than 2 GPUs, get TrPro based system, with some entry level CPU as it gives You more lanes and more slots - most of those mobos are offering up to 7x.

also, keep in mind that You have not only dual slot hybrids, but also single slot waterblocks (recently EK released one) for certain 4090s - this way, in a capable system You can slot in 7 GPUs ridectly without risers or any other mess..

all in all, plan ahead, do not cut corners (build dual GPU system on consumer or 2+ on prosumer gear) and enjoy. Once You start cutting corners You introduce issues, possible failure points and might end up spending more time tweaking gear than actually doing work.

Is there a consensus about running cards through riser cables? It seems like there are some high quality options out there. Does anyone here have experience with them?

I would love to run more than 2x 4080 on my threadripper but I only have 2-slot spacing for my 4x pcie slots. I was thinking riser cables could allow me to use a mining frame and 3-slot air cooled cards.

I've built three setups like this so far:




We've got 3x 4090 (MSI Suprim liquid cooled) working on 1 power supply.
Off the shelf components with very slight mods.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 24-Core
TRX40 AORUS PRO WIFI
256GB RAM
1600w Super Flower PSU
Fasgear 12VHPWR to 3x 8-pin power cables
3x 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID
Corsair 7000D case (this, or a similar case is critical)
OctaneBench Score ~3800

If you're worried about power draw on one PSU (hasn't been a problem for me so far) you can use MSI Afterburner and lower the power limit (to 70%-80%) with VERY little impact on the octanebench score.

Necessary mods:
-Remove the covers and fans from the MSI cards. Just a few screws, very easy and reversible. They make the cards just slightly wider than 2 slots. With a 140 case fan blowing across all 3, temps are just fine if not identical to leaving the blowers on the cards.
-low profile or right angle Mobo io cables might be necessary to fit the GPU in that lowest PCIE slot. I had to go with these USB 3.0 header extension cables, or you can just skip all your case front io.

-The side exhaust rack of the 7000D is just a little too short to fit the 2 radiators on it. I had to cut off the bottom (where it bends back toward the interior) as well as cut or bend the mating surface on the case frame. This allows the 2 radiators to just perfectly squeeze into that side exhaust area. The third radiator routes out the top. The front is for intake.
