Octane works in 2023 although many of the octane menus are missing. for example, there is no menu for tags, or octane materials. Any clue what is causing this? I am on the latest plugin, latest standalone and latest c4d running on windows.

Maxon changed some significant elements in 2023. All third party tags are now in a nested menu, making them a bit more difficult to find (and breaking muscle memory convention). You can find the tags in the Object Manager > Tags > Extensions > c4doctane tags. You can also find them by right-clicking and choose Extensions > C4dOctane tags. Of course, you can always tear off the Octane palette and nest it into the UI, and save as a custom layout.

ah awesome, thanks so much. I figured that the menu actually not functioning was way too big of a bug to have made into a release
