Hi,
This is a beta release of the OctaneRender™ 2022.1 for Houdini™ plugin compiled with the Octane 2022.1 RC1 core. This 2022.1.0.5 release is available for the latest Houdini production builds on Windows x64 and Linux gcc6.3.1.
Houdini production builds supported by this release: 18.5.759, 19.0.720, 19.5.303, 19.5.368 and 19.5.403
As with all experimental builds, we advise not to use this release for production purposes. We are trying to, but we can't guarantee that scenes saved with this version will be compatible in future releases.

=============================================
RELEASE 2022.1.0.5 RC1
=============================================
* PLUGIN FEATURES AND FIXES:
- Better color correction match between the IPR and the MPlay snapshot.
- Fixed the IPR PNG8 and PNG16 image export functions to bake the color correction.
- Improved support for the AI upsampling in the IPR window.
- Several fixes and new features in the Octane Light HDA (opacity from texture, texture color space, instance power, IES spherical projection, projection transform, etc.)
* OCTANE 2022.1 RC1 NEW FEATURES:
- Added new blend mode "Ratio" to the Composite texture
- Change the default daylight environment ground color from blue to black
- Improved sampling of environment medium, sun, DOF and time.
- Made coherent ratio less aggressive.
- Fix layer weight and albedo on macOS in material preview.
- Fixed multiple issues with AI light on macOS
- Improve geometric primitive normals by not welding them and keeping the geometric normals for each poly.
- Fixed OSL falling back to intializer first rather than vertex attributes (OSL 4.2.4).
- Fixed an unexpected spectrum to RGB conversion that happens in the Color correction node. This probably reduced color fidelity if this node was used with a spectral color.
- Fixed: switching from cylindrical to spherical panoramic camera mode, updates FOV Y to 180deg if it was 90deg.
- Fix always-black environment pass on macOS
- Fix bump maps in material previews on macOS
- Added: printed message that notes which node causes OSL warnings after linking
- Fixed OSL logb() function on macOS
- Fixed IOR when hitting a glossy layer on exiting a dielectric.
- Fixed AO rays hitting clipping materials on macOS.
- Add correct IOR tracking for shadow rays and use correct IOR values on transitions
- Slightly lowered priority of clipping materials.
- Fixed clipping material option on macOS
- Fixed slight bias in SSS effect on standard surface on macOS
- Fixed reporting of errors from loading OpenVDB files
- Fixed hang when importing certain VDBs.
- Fix GPU failure when adding a Normal texture to an environment texture.
- Make deep imaging work with photon mapping
- Fix baking camera hanging on macOS when there is no geometry (or only planes)
Happy rendering,
Your OTOY Team

This is brilliant thank you!! Works great on M1 running macOS 13 Ventura.
I'm using daily build 19.5.423 and the plugin seems to be fine on that release too.
I think this is the first time I've managed to get Octane running within Houdini since SideFX released the the Apple Silicon version. Cheers to everyone for all the effort.

Thank you for the updated Light HDA.
I believe a Perspective projection instead of UVW as well as by default black borders in the shader image is the behaviour people would expect 90% of the time for Gobo lighting scenarios. Of course everyone could tweak the hda to their liking but these seem like more usable defaults.

Thanks for the updates. Maybe update the Spectron Light HDA also. A while back they added the Spotlight node. Could you implement it in the HDA also? The current spotlight is outdated and slow.
Also, in the Spectron Light Spotlight, you could exchange the OSL Spotlight with the Spotlight node.

Question: What does the IPR do when it shows "Converting gdp" in the commandline of Houdini?
I get constant crashes in a scene all of a sudden and don't know what this means so can't debug it...
The IPR itself shows that it's loading a temp packaged GEO object at that moment - is it possible that such a temp geo is getting corrupted? I couldn't find the file or folder on my harddrives.
I also sometimes got a hard crash when changing the diameter of a torus light while using the (old) IPR.
Thanks for the updates, other than the above crashes I get really good results here from the RC1.
Windows 10, 1 RTX 2080 TI, Driver version 526.98, Houdini 19.5.435
Cheers,
Tom

pretty silly Otoy makes a lot of noise as always with their fancy promises and releases! ITs OUT!!
then you realize that half the DCCs don't have a plugin, and the beta plugins partially break becuase of license model changes and so on.
it's like they just can't help themselves when it comes to making things as confusing as possible.
Why is the octane for houdini still 2 plugins?! combine them and get the solaris side up and running... it's so crazy how disjointed an experience all this is on the user end.

It's better to trow this rant at the Facebook group were Jules actually sometimes reply because here is just us and one dev which I bet is 100% not his fault. That being said I feel the same way as you.snakeboxmedia wrote:pretty silly Otoy makes a lot of noise as always with their fancy promises and releases! ITs OUT!!
