Best Kind of GPU

Hy guys,

I'd like to ask you all a question; after i've read lot of post i haven't understood why Geforce seems better than quadro..

So , is it better Geforce 580X than Quadro 5000 for example? why? only for the number of cores are important so?
there is a lot of different about their cost.

Please somebody tell me right..

Anybody use a quadro gpu? I see only gtx geforce...

i use the quadro fx 4800 and am gutted a £400 card is quicker. but i suppose differnt cards do different things. i ussually use 3dsmax and mental ray & vray. i specialise in interior visualisation so my veiwport scenes are massive so this is where the fx4800 comes to life. also the fx4800 is more of a video editing card. Its alsogreat for dynamic simulations like cloth ect. its not designed to quickly decide pixel shades like the game cards.

if you used it to play games on you can damage the card.
for what you spend on a quadro you can buy 4 x GTX cards.

Well, depend very much on your style of work. The Quadros in general are very optimized on OpenGL\DirectX viewport on pro 3D applications and GeForce are not. For CUDA... there is no difference in performance between a Quadro and GeForce, Quadro 5000 has almost the same performance as a GTX 465 both has 352 cores (Quadro usually has lower clock speed), the only thing is the memory. On a GTX 465 you can't load super large scene because it has only 1 GB ram, on a Quadro 5000 is different story. But it depends on how large scenes you have. Obviously a scene that would not pass 1,5 GB ram for example, a GTX 580 will kill all the Quadros outside, but if the scene passes, the speed will dramatically decrees. You can also use in a way a Quadro and a GeFoce for CUDA only on the same system. I think a Quadro 2000 is more than enough for modeling and animating (this stays on the first slot on the motherboard and it will be the default card for the system were you plug all the monitors you have, you'll need to install only the Quadro drivers) or a SH Quadro 4000 and a GTX 580 doing all the octane render job or vray RT or iray etc. (this will be placed on the second slot on the motherboard, no drivers required and don't use any monitor on this). This is a simple example or an idea what you can do. It is up on you to decide, depends very much on how large the scenes you got. If the performance of a Quadro is enough for you and you have large scenes a high end Quadro is enough, if you don't have large scenes you can make the combination Quadro + GeForce or 2 GeForce cards if you don't need the extra boost from Quadro in viewport and you only need the horse power from a GTX 580 in CUDA apps, something like a GPU render farm. The problem is, and I think it's not only for me..

Interactive rendering is a good, fantastic way to set up the scenes, like a photographers.
Set up materials and lighting in interactive way requires.... viewport at max 2000pix , even you have
at least 23 inch 16:9 monitor or greater.

But at the end of set up We have to do the render at High res 300 dpi, A3 or A2 format
current default works in photography are 55 x 45 Cm 300ppi. translate is about 6500 /7500 pixel

Here is born the RAM question.. Using only Vram is quite a poor solution!

I think about Quadro 6000... but perhaps is a not soo good solution for CUDA render perocessor,
if I have understood right....

boh, we have to wait all a GeForce with 3/4 Gb I presume

Gainward offers a gtx460 with 2GB VRAM ....quite a lot stuff that would fit into 2GB.
It´s a affordable & fast card for GPU rendering. Around 200€ and less...
I suggest buying two of those.

Be carefully some Quadro drivers do not accept GeForce cards working in parallel. There some bugs I guess. If the bug appears the pro features of the Quadro despair and it starts act like ca GTS450. If that happens disable the GeForce cards from Device Manager in Windows, and activate them only whne you use CUDA apps and not OpenGL or DirectX .

When i mount geforce gpu for render do i have or not install his drivers?
I thought was strange to mount new hardware without install software..

I have a HP Z600 too with a Quadro 2000 as display card and a gtx470 as Octane/render card. I have installed the developpers driver and it works for both cards...no need to install two different drivers.
