Hi, since today, a Virus named Adware.Smartad.D trying to connect to google-analytics.com/ga.js is detected by BitDefender antivirus each time I connect to a page on Octane forum. I also detect it on Vimeo !

For the first time BitDefender says that it cannot erase the virus. The action attempted by the virus is blocked, but the virus can't be erased nor put in quarantaine and is detected for each page.

I think that several forums are infected. Maybe it is not from today, but revealed by the last update of the antivirus.

I tested my own website as well as some others including Blender.org and nothing is detected. Ordinary websites like mine or Blender.org are not infected, but most forums seems to be : Blenderartists.org is.

I don't like that !

Any idea ? It could be only a cookie, but usually cookies are not declared as virus, and can be cancelled by the antivirus.

Best regards,

Philippe.

Thank you for the heads-up. It seems to be a false positive in BitDefender. See here:

Hi, Thank you Marcus !

I searched earlier in the evening, and BitDefender support had not yet reliable infos at this time.

I prefer a false positive than an real virus. This said, I dont like google collecting infos...

Hi,

We use google analytics to get statistics for our website, as do most other sites nowadays.
It's definately not intrusive, it just shows us how busy the site is, and some extra information like what browsers and countries access the site most, which is handy for running a website, no personal information is collected.

You can use Firefox + NoScript plugin, to block unwanted & intrusive stuff on websites
