Hi,

Is it possible to have a mix material that change / fades with say a checker-like-noise vertically in the middle of an object?

Yes!
With a Composite Texture:
https://docs.otoy.com/cinema4d/CompositeTexture.html
Connected to the second mask of a Composite Material:
https://docs.otoy.com/cinema4d/CompositeMaterial.html

Please avoid to use the Mix Material, and prefer to use the Composite Material instead.
Mix Material has several limitations in C4D, works only with 2x materials, it needs to work in conjunction with 2x other node materials so it is difficult to move in another scene, it doesn't work in C4D Content Browser.
Composite Material solves all there limits, and it works correctly also with Solo node.
If you select a Mix Material in Material Manager, then go to Live View menu Materials/Convert Material, it will be automatically converted into a Composite material
Mix Material is obsolete and available only for retro compatibility.

Hi,
it depends from the Projection used for the Mask texture.
XYZ to UVW corresponds to the Planar projection, and you can rotate it toi fit your object in the desired direction.
