Hair particle system white

Hey there guys, any reason why my hair particle system doesn't want to match the colours of the material assigned to it? ie I want to make a rug. All I've done is added a material and it's texture and then assigned a particle system and chosen Hair.

After contacting support it looks like I needed to add a XYZ to UVW projection node, like so...
