hi guys,

which graphics card would you choose between 2gb gtx 460 vs 1.2 gb gtx 470 for octane rendering? comes down to faster rendering vs greater scene capacity. Not sure which route to go as both around same price.

Help!

Overclocking the 460 will outperform the 470 (once Cuda 3.2 is used to compile the next release). Also It has more memory which may come in handy for larger scenes.

Take GTX 460 2GB. I have got one. After overclock (its very easy to do in this model) it's as fast as GTX 470.

Thanks guys - hadn't considered the overclocking possibilities - i'll go with the 460 then.

New 5xx series to be released next week (December 7th) so prices may drop. Might be worth holding off for!

I'd go ahead and wait for the 5xx cards and don't even bother with the 4xx cards. I absolutely love my 465, but the prices won't go down that much. You can probabbly buy one on Ebay used for cheap though.

I'd go buy the 5xx card, then get a cheap 465 on ebay. Use them in tandem. I've been hard pressed to find something that slows down my 465, so I can imagine that these will be impressive.

prices don't seemed to have moved much since the release of the 570 - maybe it's too soon.
I still convinced the 460 is the way to go but I'm worried whether my motherboard (http://tw2005.giga-byte.com/Motherboard ... ro-SLI.htm) and power supply ( hiper 480w type r) can run with it!!!
My motherboard doesn't say it's pci-e 2.0 and the power supply doesn't come with 6 pin connectors although I've seen you can convert two 4 pins into one 6pin with a converter thingy.
Does anyone know if it would be safe to use with my kit as I really didn't want to upgrade the motherboard just yet?

GTX570 is a High-end card and GTX460 is a middle-class. High-end never changes the price of the mid-range card. Only competition from AMD can do it (HD6850 HD6870). You can wait until the end of your life before prices fall. There will always be something better and newer. In this moment GTX460 is the best solution - price/power.

familyguy

it did strike me that there wasn't really much room for the 460 to fall in price as it's all getting bunched up toward the lower end of the market. just hope i can install one.
