So, I need to get on the bus with Octane. Looks pretty darn good with a lot of potential. Problem is that I'm on a Mac. Can I upgrade my card and run Octane on the mac or do I need to upgrade my card and use bootcamp. Or . . . do I forget the mac altogether and build a windows machine specifically for Octane?

Sorry if this is an old question, but I have been all over trying to get an answer and haven't come up a good solution cardwise for the mac. Any recommendations on the best way to proceed?

I have a two year-old quad-core with an ATI 9300 now. I'm still on Leopard.

Thanks.

Hi Jake, as a mac user I bought the gtx 285 Mac edition to run. A good, but expensive card although about 3 years old.
Not sure when they will be on marked with new cards, but then they are expensive.
You better can run other cards with bootcamp. ( let's say two gtx 460 )
Maybe you'll wait for another expander solution, it was announced by the end of the year.

Thanks folks. Some good information in the links although I'm not a technical wiz when it comes to jamming in new cards with paper clips and external power supplies. Cripes. Sounds like Bootcamp or a Windoze box if I want to get in right now.

So Burkhard, what exactly is the "expander solution" you mentioned?

ps. Burkhard. I also think I know your name from another forum. Did you use a Lord of the Rings avatar at one time?

Hi Jake, sorry for being late here.
You're right about ppb-
The xpander is just an external case for Graphic cards, which can be used if you want to upgrade and there is less place.
It also can used on different machines, like MacbookPro ( with an external Slot )
You can get some information here: http://www.cubixgpu.com/
Refractive is working on a new solution, so maybe worth to wait: http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... f=7&t=4120
Also take a look here: http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... =25&t=1637

For your decision on ongoing updates it could be usefull.

Yes, ppb . . . that's it.

I've read about external cards. Seems like a really good solution that would solve a lot of problems. What's the downside?
