Hi all,
I've read just about everything I can get my hands on, but I'm really struggling with linear workflow.
When I import a linear EXR and view it within after effects, it should appear dark when "linearize working space" is disabled, and accurate when "linearize working space" is enabled, correct?
Currently, it seems to be working the other way around for me.
I've noticed that "use display color management" makes it appear correct, but I'm not sure if that's the proper setting.
-------------------
Please let me know if I'm understanding this correctly:
The point of linear is to normalize the data stored across the spectrum, so that highlights, shadows, and midrange values are normalized. Monitors display images in a non-linear tonemapped fashion, so that idea is that you work in linear and then export/display in sRGB or Rec709.
Working in linear means working with the gamma set to 1, as opposed to 2.2, making the curve from black to white linear.
When I set Octane "image color profile" and "tonemap type" to linear, that determines how it outputs those color values. The Live Viewer is taking the linear image, and tonemapping it, which means it is making those linear values fit across the sRGB curve that is the opposite of the alteration that my monitor makes when showing me imagery.
So my EXR file comes out with a linear set of color values.
I import that into after effects, and tell AE to "linearize" the working space, as that is how the data coming into AE should be interpreted.
