Particle texturing

How can I texture particles so that they retain the color from the start of simulation. I can use front projection mapping but the colors don't stick to them when they start to move.

This can be done using a color vertex attribute, but to be honest I'm not sure how to build this vertex attribute from a texture map in LightWave, if this is what you are trying to do. In Houdini for example is really easy.
