Thank you both for your answers.

Im sorry I havent made it clear have I. Please ignore that plane in my file as its only there to indicate that if i was to do this with just C4D native the same texture would be applied to both the ground plane and the background object along with the comp tag. I would then set the comp tag to composite background and it would combine the two. This would allow me to have an object placed on the plane and cast shadows and refections onto the ground plane but look like its part of the overall image.

Let me start again as you guys really know your stuff so I hoping I get to the bottom of this.

That scene I supplied is just an example and not what I intend to use. What I ideally want is the ability to have say a cube (or another object) siting on the ground to look like its part of the background image. I want to be able to have the cube (or another object) cast a shadow and possibly a reflection onto the floor and in turn have the floor (and background image) reflect back into the cube. Just to be clear I dont want to render the plane but just use it (if I need to in octane) to help with shadows and reflections.

Do either of you think this is possible?

Hi again
This screen shot attached hopefully is better for getting across what Im trying to achieve. So its quite basic which is why im sure octane should able to handle it? All I want to do is be able to have the the box or an object look like its sitting on the table top so it casts a shadow and the table top reflects back into the cube, is that possible with octane?
Thanks again guys as your input so far has been very informative.

Hi
Ok ive played around and got to this simple setup now showing the shadows on the table top. To do this though ive had to use the diffuse material which enables me to have the shadow catcher turned on. My next question would be how to go about being able to use a glossy floor so the object reflects on the floor image? Also if I want to be able to use a separate HDRi can I do that too?
Ive attached this file now.
Thank you again for any help.

Sorry to insist, but for Reflections you need to use the Render Layer technique:
http://www.aoktar.com/octane/RenderLayer.html

Shadow Catcher option is only for shadows, we don’t have a Reflection Catcher material.

Thank you Beppe.

I thought as much regarding the shadow catcher but thanks for confirming Beppe ;)

Do you know how I could go about making that floor texture look like its reflecting the objects and be a part of that scene? I know if I just put a plane with a glossy material on it then it'll reflect the objects but then it wont look correct. Is there anyway to project my background table texture so that it would be in the same position but just reflect? Would I have to use some sort of reflection pass and comp it together?

Hi,
have a look at what is going to arrive with the upcoming 2020.2-XB4 c4doctane version. This is an example of Compositing in Standalone viewport of the Render Layer technique, where you can define the intensity of the reflection layer, or change its color, in real time, with the desired image in background:

and here is the original render with Render Layer disabled:

That looks amazing thank you Beppe :)

Could you share that file with me so I can investigate it further?

Thanks
