Dear Octane community,

OTOY® is proud to announce the availability of new DCC plugin OctaneRender Hydra | Solaris (V2020.1.3 - for Houdini 18.0.499) and Octane X Hydra | Solaris (PR1 for Houdini 18.0.499).

The world's fastest unbiased GPU rendering engine on CUDA and Metal now integrates completely with Houdini 18.0 Solaris.

What is Octane Hydra | Solaris?
The Octane Hydra | Solaris plugin is based on Pixar’s USD (Universal Scene Description) and Pixar’s Hydra API to empower artist workflows across look development, scene layout, lighting, and final rendering.

Invert normal in Dirt doesn't work. Gradient ramp also doesn't work. Is it a bug or is it not supported yet?

Thanks for all the work to the developer.

But from us its a Red card to Otoy for such a botched early announcement. We already decided to move on to another render.

This plugin (if in a good beta state and if it develops a solid USD roots) should be front page,IMHO more important than the OctaneX and on par with the Unreal plugin.

Exciting to see this taking shape! Solaris has such great potential. There is some super jank on the Houdini end though, so that's holding things back for now. In particular, depth of field breaks constantly. I emailed SideFX about it and they say it will be getting better soon. The Octane delegate seems to be working fairly well so far. Looking forward to seeing how this all develops going forward.

I agree Hydra is the future, and Octane Hydra tech needs it’s own mega release event like Octane X, but we are saving that for Siggraph if all goes well. Our plans for Hydra go way beyond this Solaris render delegate. In fact we are moving hydra work this month into core, it’s too important and interconnected to be treated as just another plugin.

We plan to build this once we have Windows and Mac Metal solid and stable so we can benefit from the wider testing on those platforms before focusing on any Linux specific issues.
