MR has probably a better solution for addressing this problem. I also haven't seen this problem in Blender internal renderer, but it's present in Yafaray, for example.
Lowering rayepsilon in Octane works on the material ball (on default settings and daylight lighting the ball has a bright 'band', if you set rayepsilon to 0 the band disappears), but it seems that in your case has different (worse) effects.
Subdividing is not an optimal solution, but will have to do for now.
