This is all rather exciting!
Talking hardware. What would people recommend for a portable MacBook Pro 2017 set up for freelance use?
Obviously the dream is the Mac Pro stuffed full with graphics cards but for those who need to be portable? Which eGPU with which graphics cards?

Back when I had hope for sticking with my iMac Pro & dual eGPU I had two Razor Core X and RX 5700xt (Asus blower) and that worked pretty well for Davinci and when I played with ProRender. Honestly though I'd use what you have now and wait for Big Navi and a more stable release of Octane X which should come out right around the same time
By now though the 5700xt are almost sold out everywhere so if you're looking for something right now I'd get the Razor Core X and a used Radeon VII + some external display because I have no idea how anyone could use just a 15" display

General-purpose computing requires more stream processors and larger video memory.
Radeon VII has more advantages!

Seeing that plus the uniform memory architecture has me so confused! Hopefully this will all shake out in a few years by the next Mac Pro cycle. By the sound of it Octane X will pretty much run on anything so as long as there's silicon to suck up +1000w of power for Metal I'll be happy whatever it is.
