When I switch light type to Spectron, I see no options to chose other light modes. The nodal still only has the barn doors spot light volume options. Confused??

The other spectron lights are enabled using the switch available in the main lights panel. You don't need the light node editor at all.

Thanks,

So this makes the current light Specton? I don't need to set light type to Spectron? That's where I was getting confused.

The node editor is for the spotlight only. It's implementation was so convoluted that the node editor was the best option. The other spectron lights can be activated enabling the option in the light panel.

Inside a volume medium yes, like the conventional lights, but they don't have proper settings to render volumetric light like the spotlight.

Ah okay, so I need a medium object in order to produce any volume effect.
