Mixing glass with transparent glossy or translucent diffuse is the way to go (or at least try).

Would it not help to reduce the amount of bears though, because the light doesn't have to travel through 5 bears if there are maximum two bears on top of each other?

The problem seems to exist to a lesser extend on the bears that are not surrounded by so many other bears.

Btw this reminds me of http://www.vat19.com/dvds/worlds-largest-gummy-bear.cfm :D
