But the lighting could be more dramatic, less flat maybe ;)
Also try to get the background to be white, in studio photography the white balance is very important
You can't sell a picture like that with a pinkish background :D
Hi Sam, thanks for the comments.
I'm going to disagree with you on a few points.
I find that alot of HDRI lit images are to obvious, with overburnt reflections, etc. That is why I have gone for fairly flat lighting.

It would be quite easy to make the backdrop white in PS with a tweak of the levels. I tried that, but decided not to.
Besides, what would have been the point in using the camera tone/response map? :) (the backdrop was 100%white with no camera response.)
If this was a piece for a client, then you are right, the backdrop would be white.

@havensole : Yes, I am a Blender user. I apply modifiers before exporting, in order to give less work to the script. I have also reduced the subdivision level when possible.

I have been able to render only one image with this setup before it crashed, and after at least 6 rebuilt from scratch...
So no much room to make lighting trials...
It is a marvelous tool... I hope that it will be more stable in a close future.
A better graphic card will also help a lot, I think !

New Entry :
Image

This scene is only open on the top (no ceiling) and on the right side (because there is a wall reflecting in the mirror),
so it is not easy to get some light going inside.

2048 samples per pixel - Rendered in 00:16:24 -869415 Triangles - 364.3/511 MB memory used.

Hi Roubal,

It's getting better and better :)
I'd suggest maybe trying to make it look better by having better lighting.

Maybe try to use a room with open areas as windows behind the camera,
so it's not so uniformly lit...

Thank you radiance.

I'll really like to improve the lighting, but I get frequently a crash when loading hdr images, and as it is required when all materials are adjusted, I have to redo everything from scratch each time ! a nightmare !

I will try again tomorrow...

it's probably because you run out of memory to store the HDR map.?
you could load it in first, before you start adjusting the materials...

That's an idea, however it is not so easy to appreciate the effect of the lighting on rough materials...

With a little hope something more tomorrow...

I think the demo version (after the beta) should be able to load / save scenes
But can't save renders, and render with watermarks

So demo users can make better work and are not frustrated with need to redo everything ;)
Good progress ROUBAL

Thanks Sam !

Yes, I'm becoming mad ! Just one render and a crash. I never can render two images with the same setting
and I can't optimize my scene.
If I move the smallest thing when I've done almost everything, Octane shuts down.
It has displayed a warning : deleting a texture to allocate memory.

2048 samples per pixel - Rendered in 00:21:00 - 1 015 345 Triangles - 475.7/511 MB used.
I was at 513/511 before Octane warning !
Few fireflies removed.

Hi to all,

I play with octane more than I want.
I tried to integrat an excavator model in a real picture, here the result. The model is not from me.

There are very nice entries in the competition, they show the potential of octane.

Rendered with octane9000 0.8a
