Standalone needs few resources, but C4D does not, so you have not enough room for working with an integrated plugin, I guess.

terrific..

Isn't that a bit misleading?
The FAQ says 'OctaneRender also requires a minimum of 8 GB RAM, and we recommend 16 GB or more', the benchmark says low score but renders faster and better than C4ds renderer. The benchmark uses approx. 900MB of RAM and does its job undisturbed by other programs (like PS & C4d) being worked in. The actual (standalone) renderer doesn't even show me a preview, just freezes and none of the logs show any sign of too low on system RAM or any message that there's not enough.. and there's not even a slight raise in RAMusage before the freeze in C4d or the renderer.

That sucks.

Does it happen also with a simple cube an a small rendering dimensions?
VRAM and RAM define the complexity that your machine can handle.
What is the exact model of your CPU?

Hi Beppe,

thanks for your time.

Yes until now I only tried with a super simple scene, 2 blocks + 1 pointlight, nothing fancy. In the standalone renderer its the 'benchmark' scene setup I believe.
My CPU is an old intel Core 2 Quad Q9950 - pls see attached image.

The last time I did some Octane preference & rendering changes and it didn't freeze starting the render but C4D 'cleanly crashed' with a bugreport. Could this help you getting to the bottom of this?

Not sure if it helps, but I tried the Redshift GPU renderer (since it has equal min. hardware needs) and it works just fine (even using my rather complex production scenes I usually sourced out to renderfarms)
