Hey Guys,
i use Octane now since first release. I loved the fact, it WAS affordable and a great engine for one time payment. Just found out about the new Subscription model. So i work as a freelancer and don't need the renderer every month. I really wonder why i should now pay waaaay more to get a newest release only for one year and then lose it if i don't pay again. I sometimes need to deliver stuff that i started 1 or 2 years ago and will not, pay again the whole thing again just to update a few images for one client. So i'll stay with version 4.x forever, so i'm sure i can also open all my files even in one year, whithout shifting amounts from my paypal to otoy for nothing. I'm totally fine to pay for a major update release if i want it. But then, get and keeeeep what i bought. Also, there are plenty good competitors out now (Redshift for example) that make it very easy and attractive for me to shift my whole workflow over to. So... what is the point here? Gettin' greedy or what.
What do you think? CHeers, Max
New Subbscription System is Suicide for Octane?

v4 is probably the end of the line for me as well, just for old jobs. Sorry, but Octane development is woefully, painfully slow. After working for many months with Blender builds that are right out of a piping hot oven, I'm not going to take 20 steps back and start working in builds that are half a year old.. considered "stable". I've had Blender crash on me once in the past week with 2.81.16, and it was no biggie... So for me, I guess it has less to do with subscriptions, and much more to do with Otoy's poor decision making...

Please tell us when is that perpetual coming, I'm listening that "stay tuned" or "soon" for last 3-4 months and still nothing, My AA expired in 14 days and i've not finished any projects in octane 2018/2019 'coz i fear of not being to open my files later on so i still keep using v4.x although i payed full 3*AA licenses (my bad/stupidity as it turns out so far unless you actually convert that to perpetual as Goldorak said it will be). I definitely wont extend that AA if i'm not sure i got 2019.x update as perpetual and same for 2020.......
I don't understand why it's taking so much time (Goldorak mentioned it few months ago in that gigantic topic) to make perpetual option angina when all up to v 4.x was available with that mode). Please just copy/paste that system and then leave AA and Subs for people that want it that way but do not force people to Rent Only modes.

@Lewis, there is no official info right now, but 14days should be enough ;) to see more licence options to choose from.

The new Subscription model is horrible; why would OToy go this route. Which brings me to another question I have about my own account, I recently download 2019.x of Octane Standalone; when I attempting to install, I'm prompted for my account password, when I enter in the correct credentials as I would, which work; for the Account page for Otoy, it doesn't work when attempting to install 2019.x ?
Atleast 2020 should be another free upgrade, look at the sea of render engines, charging for a subscription is, at this time; a flaky decision.

It feels pricing for owners of perpetual license (as me) is a bit high.
I explain.
I've bought octane standalone and plugin in 2014 (full purchase) 459€
Than in 2018 I'm asked to pay to upgrade to new version 75usd
than now 2021 I'm asked to pay to update my full version (perpetual license) 499€
Figure... I've downloaded the trial version to see what I'm buying if it's worth.
Definitely the improvements in speed and other things are here.
The speed in rendering has really increased a lot.
But every one agrees that this is not a new engine (octane 2020), most of the blocks of octane are here since my version 4x.
I'm still having trouble to figure out why to update my perpetual license, the cost is higher than my original purchase.
If you guys at octane create something totally new, I would agree to pay 499€, but as of today I'm confused about the update pricing for perpetual license owners.
And as the person who started this thread I'm not using Octane every day, and not making a cent, more of a learning situation, and maybe maybe future shift in my work.
Best greetings to all, and tnx for reading
