i usually work through the day-evening and when i have more demanding projects i let it render over night, such is the case currently.
i am producing some advertising animations, time is ofcourse critical especially so due to the upcoming holidays. yesterday night i needed to render out a sequence in blender but after windows 10 messing me about with updates (could not postpone 1809 any longer)
octane would not start. the error dialog is that my license is in use (on the same pc smfh)
so i lost out on a day of updating a client in a critical phase and endured the embarrasement of seeming unprofessional.
all thanks to otoy and the wonderful online licensing.
i already wrote to support, but figured i might aswell write here and vent a bit. not very mature i know but what the hell am i supposed to do.
the rental licensing was supposed to bring some benefit to the end client surely? i mean we all know its just there for siphoning money out of us in perpetuity but there has to be some veneer of user benefit.
instead it keeps fucking us over and actually has actually become an active hindrance.
between e-cycles rtx powered and eevee, unreal etc. my presumption is commercial rendering engines will become obsolete in years to come.
now i wouldnt actually mind paying and supporting a company that has treated me well even if that were the case.
but otoy? i cant wait to get off this shitty wagon i swear to god.
sidequestion: since i am sitting having nothing to do, i am wondering how this online licensing goes?
if i were not to have online access for a day or two does that mean i cant get any work done?
license in use - nuts in a vice

Hi,
did you solve your issues with Otoy Support?
Probably your licenses were active before running the Windows update.
In this case, you need to visit your personal Octanelive page, and deactivate your licenses by pressing the red Unlock button beside of both licenses, Standalone and plugin:
for Commercial licenses
for Subscription licenses
Please note that the web counter will be rest to maximum after a certain period of time, if the unlock button will not be used during that time.
Next time, before upgrading Win, or if you need to move them on another machine, better to manually deactivate your licenses.
To do so, you need to go to Octane Settings/Account, and press the sign-out button, to deactivate your licenses, here is a screenshot for C4D, but should be similar for any plugin:

You can check the status of your licenses by visiting your personal octanelive page.
ciao Beppe

thank you very much beppe,
support did get in touch, apparently i had to unlock the license via my account.
still have one unlock left, i wonder if can get it back to two just in case.
i will also consider deactivating but windows actually did this while i wasnt watching, not the first time too.
i deactivated the updates but still it was forced on me since 1803 is not supported any longer.
its was really infuriating. we never relied so much on tech and software, yet it has become a russian roulette.
each time windows 10 starts updating my heart is in my stomach.
in any case, since i have your attention, should i expect any performance changes between 1803 and 1809?
or is that rtx speed up only relevant to dx12 and realtime?

Hi,
good to hear that you have solved.
The unlocks will be reset in a month, or via Support.
About Win 10 - 1903, it is not giving you more speed, but more stability.
Nvidia Studio driver versions are very stable under 1903, especially with RTX GPUs.
Happy GPU Rendering,
